p. 8. In the early 1990s, one artist formulated an innovative way of recycling a portion of the Mao heritage. In his 1993-94 work "Post-Testament" (
Houyue
) the Beijing/New York artist Xu Bing used high-quality, acid-free "political document paper" (
zhengwen zhi
) manufactured prior to the Cultural Revolution for the express purpose of printing foreign-language editions of Mao's
Selected Works
and poetry. Xu found a cache of this paper in the warehouse of the Beijing Foreign Languages Press and was able to acquire an amount of it for his own work: hand-bound volumes containing a nonsense text.
