Chapter One

DALTON Sands slowly sipped his coffee as he took in the other patrons of the café. This was always his favorite part of the day. It was when he could prepare mentally for the day to come.

He needed this time because of all the stress that he would be facing with his job. Running a Fortune 500 company didn’t leave him a lot of time to just relax.

So this was his time.

As he let his eyes roam around doing a little people-watching, he saw her for the first time.

She was very pretty, with a curtain of straight black hair falling forward because she was looking down. A simple dress covered her curvaceous body.

There was really nothing about her that would have stood out in a large crowd, but there was something that drew Dalton’s attention to her instantly. He continued to watch her as she timidly ordered her latte and paid for it.

When the woman turned from the cashier and looked around the room, Dalton saw that she was young, probably in her mid-twenties, and her face was quite pretty. He saw a dismayed look cross her face as she looked around for a vacant spot to sit.

As her eyes glanced in his direction, he found that he was signaling her. She looked very startled, like she almost didn’t believe that he was trying to get her attention.

When she did finally comprehend that little bit of knowledge, she made her way slowly to his table, puzzlement evident in every step she took.

“Hi, there,” Dalton said in a friendly manner.

He flashed his sexiest smile.

“I’m Dalton Sands. Since I have this whole table to myself, would you do me the honor of joining me?”

“Hi, I’m Rose. Uh, Rose Addison. This is very kind of you, Mr. Sands,” Rose managed to say as she sat down in the chair across the table from him. “I always get here during the really crowded hours so I almost never get a seat.”

“First of all, Mr. Sands is my father. Please call me Dalton, and I’m actually pleased to have your company.”

He watched as Rose lived up to her name in the delightful way; she was blushing at that very moment. Her bright blue eyes quickly looked down, long black lashes brushing her face.

“Very well, Dalton,” she finally replied. “I’m also very happy to be joining you.”

They sat in companionable silence for a few minutes as they both enjoyed their coffee. Dalton made a few surreptitious glances at her from under his own lashes.

She was a rather strange girl, he decided.

Pretty, but shy, Rose wasn’t like the women whom he came into contact with normally. She wasn’t trying to take over the conversation or aggressively hit on him.

In fact, she truly didn’t seem to know whom she even was.

Eventually, they began to talk in the way that strangers do when they don’t know each other. Dalton found out that Rose worked in the Human Resources department of his building. She wasn’t from the city and was still getting used to living there even though she had been a resident for three years.

He found her refreshing.

She was pretty without being flamboyant, intelligent without trying to show off, and very unassuming. He was relieved that she seemed happy enough to answer his questions about her and wasn’t trying to find out more about him.

It was a little soon for him to let her know his true identity because he was becoming more aware that he wanted to know a bit more about this Rose.

Dalton had long ago given up on true relationships. He had discovered that women simply weren’t in line with what he needed in his life.

In fact, he wasn’t even sure what he needed to fill this void within him.

Of course, he had intimate encounters with women. After all, he was a healthy man with certain physical needs. But none of those women ever meant anything to him other than as a way to kill time and find release. Some of those women were so in charge, so to speak, that it felt like he was going out with another man.

He was starting to see that Rose was different from other women.

Dalton was a man that liked to be in control.

He had a feeling that Rose was in need of a man to guide her.

Chapter Two

BY the time they were done with their coffee, Dalton was certain that he wanted to see more of Rose.

He had a feeling that he needed to act quickly or she would glide right out of his life and he would never see her again.

Whatever he was going to do, he realized that he had better do it soon because Rose was getting up to leave.

“Thank you so much for allowing me to join you, Dalton,” Rose said quietly as she gave him a pretty smile.

“Oh, the pleasure was all mine,” Dalton responded. “Actually, I was wondering what you’re doing for dinner.”

Rose blinked, surprised at the question.

“Oh, um, I don’t have any plans.”

“Well, now you do! I would love it if you would join me for dinner. I’m going to need your address so that I can pick you up at seven tonight.”

Rose hesitated for a moment, then smiled.

He felt his breath hitch.

It was a fairy-tale smile.

She wrote down her address for him and agreed to be ready at seven.

“Well, okay, I’ll see you then,” she said.

Once more she smiled as she looked at him.

And then she was gone.

DALTON looked forward to his date with Rose more than he expected he would.

Before he knew it, he was ready to leave the office for the day. This meant that he could head home and get ready for his dinner with Rose. He hoped that she was going to be all right with what he had planned.

Rose was ready to go precisely at seven when Dalton arrived.

She was wearing a lovely red dress that fit her body as if it was made just for her.

Dalton couldn’t help but look at her appreciatively.

“Rose, you look amazing,” he said.

Demurely smiling, she thanked him.

She knew how well the dress looked on her, but it was generous of him to say she looked nice.

She was a bit stunned when he led her to a shiny black limousine where a chauffeur patiently waited.

Once inside of the back of the limo, Dalton poured them both some chilled wine.

The ride was so smooth that she didn’t worry at all about spilling any of it.

As they rode, she listened to Dalton discuss his country home where they were going for dinner.

He casually picked up her hand during the ride and held it as they made their way along the winding country roads.

The house resembled a mansion as Rose realized once they arrived. The driveway extended almost two miles and was sheltered by overhanging trees. There was even a bridge they crossed.

She had never seen anything quite like it.

The chauffeur opened the door so that she and Dalton could get out.

He was still holding her hand as he led her up the stairs to the double front doors.

A very proper butler, dressed in a suit and tie, opened the front doors to welcome them.

“Dinner is ready to be served, Master Dalton, any time you like.”

“Thank you, Charles,” Dalton said. “We’ll go in now.”

He looked at Rose, who stared, stunned. “Shall we?” he asked.

He grew nervous when she did not reply right away.

Then she seemed to resolve something in her mind, and she looked at him again. Her eyes smiled.

“Okay.”

He released his breath, not even knowing he was holding it.

When was the last time he’d ever felt defensive for being rich?

Never.

She stepped towards the foyer as if walking on clouds, and he followed her.

Chapter Three

THE dinner was one of the most delicious meals Rose had ever had.

The wine was a luxury she would never be able to afford and the food was something only read about in fancy recipe books or seen on the Food Channel.

She was telling him this with a simple, charming directness.

She was delighted, but not overwhelmed.

She looked like she was enjoying herself but did not seem to be intimidated by him.

What he didn’t like was the distinct impression that she presumed this would just be a passing fancy of his, then forgotten by tomorrow.

He didn’t want her to think that way.

As they enjoyed their after-dinner coffee, Dalton observed Rose very closely.

He made a decision by the time they set their empty cups down.

Getting up from his chair, Dalton walked to Rose and held out his hand.

“Come with me,” he directed.

Rose took his hand and followed him out into the large foyer and up the winding staircase. She was so captivated with her surroundings that it didn’t occur to her to question anything he was doing.

After walking down a wide hallway, they stopped in front of a very ornate door.

Dalton then did a very odd thing.

He reached within his pocket and withdrew a rather large skeleton key.

Unlocking the door, Dalton led Rose into the room, explaining that this was where she would be spending the night.

As she started to protest, he turned to face her.

He put his hands on her shoulders and silenced her with his mouth.

The kiss was nothing short of electric.

Rose melted in his arms and Dalton experienced an excitement, an exhilaration, that he didn’t remember having felt before.

He felt Rose leaning into the kiss, surrendering soft lips and a body that was delectably appealing.

He abruptly pulled away before it got out of control, leaving her gasping.

Walking away from her, Dalton pointed in the direction of the adjoining bathroom.

“Go in there. You will find clothing that you can wear for tonight,” he told her.

His eyes searched her face for anything indicating she didn’t enjoy what was happening.

Nothing said otherwise.

He almost smiled his relief.

Staring mutely at him, Rose obeyed without a word.

He closed his eyes, murmuring a sound that was both supplication and a sigh of thanks.

When she re-entered the bedroom, she was wearing something akin to a Grecian goddess gown.

It was made from a red see-through material that provided him an accurate look at her luscious body.

“Amazing!” he whispered.

He proceeded to walk into the bathroom and return holding Rose’s clothes.

He did not even look at her, afraid of what she would do.

He had to do this according to plan.

Heading toward the door, he bid her goodnight.

“But where are you going with my clothes?” Rose inquired, confusion clouding her face.

“I’ll see you in the morning,” he said as he continued through the door.

He closed it behind him and she heard a resounding click as he turned the key.

He had locked her in the room...

About the Author

The moment Sandra Ross held her first romance novel when she was ten, she knew she was going to write romance. At thirty now, a prolific reader and a freelance writer, she's since then expanded her preferences from just romance to romance with a dash of now trending sub-genres--paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi even, and erotica. She loves challenging herself and would write on a dare. On a normal day, she would be found in her herb garden collecting spices for her kitchen or ingredients for her potions; in her huge eclectic Provencal kitchen with the big modern oven cooking pots and pans of food for her family of one husband and three kids (an ardent daughter and two boisterous sons) that'll probably last for weeks; in her library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and an e-reader in her hands as she reads the latest erotic hit; or scribbling pages upon pages of different erotic lifestyles, searching for the one that feels like it was inspired by just the right mix of passion, story line, and sex. Aside from these activities, the rest of the time she'd be found in front of her laptop typing the latest Sandra Ross concoction for her readers.
