The author’s maternal grandfather’s family is a case in point. Before 1938 they owned a substantial corner of the Kärntnerstrasse and the Weihburggasse in the centre of Vienna. On the site was the department store Modehaus Zwieback, the restaurant Zu den drei Husaren and the Palais Pereira. After the war the family managed to regain the department store, which they resold in 1957. On the other hand they were not compensated for their lost palace and the restaurant was later sold by Göring’s favourite restaurateur, Gustav Horcher, to Egon Födermayr.
