SS:
And stem cell transplantation would allow the patient, say, with leukemia, to stay on that drug indefinitely?

DM:
Without stem cell transplantation the disease can be controlled
by the drug, but research shows that, ultimately, if the immune system is compromised and no longer effective, the cancer stem cell eventually will switch on and will no longer be controlled by the Gleevec.

SS:
And then the person’s disease recurs or relapses?

DM:
Yes. The only treatment we have at that point is a stem cell transplant to repair the weakened immune system that allowed the cancer stem cells to grow in the first place.

SS:
But why do some cancer patients who take chemotherapy survive? Are they simply time bombs?

DM:
I have patients who have been cured of cancer. The answer that keeps coming to me is that their immune system was repaired. I have collaborated with Dr. Zheng Cui, a cancer biologist at Wake Forest University. Dr. Cui found a cancer-resistant mouse! This is a mouse that would never get cancer. It didn’t matter what type of cancer cells were administered to it, the mouse would not get cancer. Dr. Cui took the cells of the immune system of this mouse and gave it back to mice that did have cancer and he cured them of the cancers. We currently have a clinical trial that is ongoing in humans where we are using a very similar approach to identify individuals who are cancer resistant and ask them to donate some of their white cells so that we can treat patients who have cancer.

THE IDEA IS THAT IF WE ARE USING THE WHITE CELLS OR THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE CANCER RESISTANT, THEN WE CAN GIVE THOSE WHITE BLOOD CELLS BACK TO PATIENTS WHO HAVE CANCER AND HOPEFULLY CURE THEM LIKE THE MICE.

SS:
This is brand-new information to me. When I wrote
Knockout
, there were the rare aberrations showing patients who somehow survived cancer and orthodox treatment, and then there were the successes with the three kinds of cancer who did respond to chemotherapy: childhood leukemia, lymphoma, and testicular cancer, as in the case of Lance Armstrong.

BUT WHAT YOU JUST SAID IS BRAND-NEW INFORMATION … THAT
THERE ARE ACTUALLY PEOPLE WHO ARE RESISTANT TO CANCER
!

How does one tap into that good karma, to have that special gene?

DM:
It is indeed good fortune not only for the individual but also for cancer advancement.

SS:
This is incredible for humanity. We will all benefit from the white cells of these individuals.

DM:
We have to be able to prove this in our clinical trial, but I am very enthusiastic.

SS:
I thought white blood cells didn’t respond well to microorganisms that cause disease, that the blood cells think the pathogen is you so they attack you, as in autoimmune diseases. Is that true?

DM:
It comes back to the immune system. There are two types of immune systems: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system. The cancer bacterial surveillance system is actually the innate immune system. Within the cells of the innate immune system there are granulocytes, monocytes, lymphocytes, dendritic cells, and natural killer cells. These are all the cells that actually will prevent cancers from developing in the first place, because when a cell becomes cancerous these immune cells will kill the cancer cell. These are the cells we are actually collecting from people who are essentially cancer resistant and giving them back to patients who have cancer.

SS:
So people with a strong innate immune system are the ones who are cancer resistant? Is there a test to determine if you are one of the lucky ones to have these cells?

DM:
A test called the
Cancer Killing Assay
has been developed, but we have not been able to fully utilize it because of lack of funding for this research. The idea here is to identify the genes or other factors that confer immunity against cancer and utilize this information to prevent cancer in individuals who are predisposed or to expand these specialized cells for patients with cancer.

Now the adaptive immune system is the second system: In autoimmune disease, a pathogen or toxin stimulates the adaptive immune
system and this system continues to function autonomously. It’s almost as if it’s gone into overdrive and it continues to function without any checks and balances. Normally when a person encounters a foreign antigen, the adaptive immune system reacts to it and creates a state of tolerance so that the next time the person is exposed to it, the immune system recognizes it and destroys it without damage to the individual. In the individual with an autoimmune disease, this mechanism is abnormal and the individual’s immune system continues to react to it. This is called an
immunogenic response
.

SS:
Why is there so much autoimmune disease at present?

DM:
Because our immune system is continuously being stimulated from immunogens, pathogens, infection, and toxins. Then it becomes automatic … the immune system begins to function on its own and cause damage. A disease like rheumatoid arthritis is an example of an autoimmune disease where the immune system is basically in overdrive continuously destroying joints.

SS:
So keeping your immune system strong through a healthy diet and lifestyle protects you against the worst diseases and by doing so you can expect a longer life?

DM:
Yes. If you ride into the future in good health, there will be a big payoff: stem cell protocols that will extend life and wipe out diseases.

SS:
And right now you are having success with cancer, even in terms of using the word “cure,” if the patient gets there early enough and is able to access your protocols?

DM:
Yes. And also in the other areas we are exploring as well, chronic diseases like diabetes, stroke, and Parkinson’s. Our research indicates that potentially these are diseases that will be treatable using patients’ own stem cells with good results.

SS:
What can we the patients do to be able to access these advancements?

DM:
As I said earlier, I feel it is a good idea to bank and store your own stem cells while you are healthy. But more than that I want to be part of the movement that informs people about the crucial necessity of diet and lifestyle, so there is less likelihood that they ever have to see me to get treated for cancer. But if they do come, I am hopeful that the chances of success will be significantly better than what is currently offered as standard-of-care cancer treatments. I believe in what I am doing, and the progress we are making. I want to change the paradigm; cancer is not a death sentence. If we can educate
people and simultaneously develop these new methods of restoring the immune system, then if cancer did occur in a patient, we could regulate his or her immune system and knock out the cancer stem cell.

SS:
This is exciting progress for the future and for what is happening at present.

DM:
I am extremely upbeat and hopeful that we can treat patients very, very effectively.

SS:
What do you dream about?

DM:
My dream is that each day when I wake up I make a difference in the lives of everyone I impact or who I meet. I want to make a positive difference in their lives, and by my own example, I can share with my family, my friends, and anyone with whom I come in contact, to set a good example of how we can live a good and healthy, long life.

SS:
Thank you. A lovely way to end.

CHAPTER 14

BOMBSHELL #10: A SKIN PATCH MAY SLOW DOWN AGING

It is clear that the more you abuse your body by insulting it with toxic substances, the more likely one of your repair systems will undergo an early breakdown.

–David Kekich,
Life Extension Express

A patch that uses
nanotechnology to prevent aging? Sound too good to be true? It’s not. You wear these patches and changes happen in your body? Yep. They help you sleep, help you with pain, help you detoxify and repair cell damage; there is one in development that may even help to prevent breast cancer. But the big one is available now: a patch that may slow down aging!

Slowing down aging is a Bombshell! This is a book about redefining aging. I am always looking for the nondrug way to accomplish the impossible. I am so enthusiastic about these patches that I have been the ambassador for this company for the past few years. I use these patches for pain, sleep, detoxification, energy, and preventing disease.

As a result of these patches, and the other self-care measures that I practice, I have not taken an over-the-counter drug in years with the exception of my stem cell breast surgery earlier this year, when I took pain medication for a couple of days. Again, I’m a believer. See what you think.

DAVID SCHMIDT

David Schmidt
is a fascinating man. He is a scientist and the founder of LifeWave, Inc. He was educated in management information systems and biology at Pace University in Pleasantville, New York. He went on to specialize in energy production technologies for both the military and commercial applications. He developed new methods for producing hydrogen and oxygen and constructed metal combustion engines. He also designed emergency oxygen systems for General Dynamics and the U.S. Navy and was invited to participate in the navy’s next-generation mini-sub program. His background in biology helps him to explain how individual human cells operate and why we need to care for each and every cell in our bodies as a means of preventing cancer and other disease. If the human body is made up of cells reproducing, then taking care of each and every cell is crucial to life. His patches are about that, as he will explain
