“Go?” I repeated in surprise. “Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

I grabbed my purse and followed him out of the apartment, patting Taco on the head. “We’ll be back soon,” I promised the dog.

A few minutes later, we pulled up and parked in front of Les Etoiles, and I looked at Devin in confusion. “I know you have some bad memories associated with this place,” he said. “But your friend works here, and it’s a great restaurant. Let’s make some new memories. Some good ones.” He squeezed my hand, and I squeezed back and followed him inside.

He led me to a back room, and as we walked in, my friends and family popped out. “Surprise!” they all yelled in unison. I jumped and stared at Devin in disbelief, my heart swelling.

He winked. “I told you I know how to plan.”

All of the Honeybees were there, as well as my sister, January, her fiancé, Ben, and my parents.

“I have so many wedding planning books I can give you,” January told me as she came in for a hug. “You’ll be a natural.” Her own wedding was just three months away.

I laughed. “I’m definitely not thinking about that yet!”

Then, overwhelmed, I turned to Devin. “This is amazing, Devin,” I said. “Thank you.” I gave him a gentle kiss on the lips, and everyone cheered.

After rounds of drinks and toasts and lots of oohing and aahing over my ring, we sat down to dinner. I leaned over to Caroline, sitting on my left. “Hey, what did you mean last night about having big plans?” I asked.

She smiled. “I’ll tell you soon. For now, just enjoy your night.”

I clinked glasses with her and stared across the table at my new fiancé. An amber curl was falling in front of his eye, and as I watched, he pushed it out of the way and caught me staring. We smiled at each other.

“I love you,” I mouthed. I couldn’t wait to marry this man. He’d keep me from being too predictable, and I’d keep him grounded. We’d hold each other’s hearts and keep each other safe…for the rest of our lives.

I looked around the table at everyone who had come out to celebrate with us. What a different experience this was from the first time I’d been here. And how glad I was that on that night so long ago, Matt hadn’t asked me to marry him after all. My life may not have followed the path I’d expected, but here, with my fiancé, my family, and my friends, I knew I was just where I was supposed to be.

Eight Weeks to Mr. Right

(Prequel to
Breaking the Rules
)

Every reality show needs a villain. But what happens when no one steps up?

January Burleigh never expected to go on reality TV. But when she found out that the young CEO of her dream company, a major perfume house, would be the inaugural Mr. Right on a new dating show, she thought it would be a good way to get her foot in the door. Now, the cameras have finished rolling and January is back in her hometown of San Francisco, caught in limbo until the episodes air and she can make her next move.

On the night of the first episode, January runs into her old high school boyfriend, Ben Strafford, who throws all of January’s plans for a loop. It’s been thirteen years since they were together, but his familiar, comforting scent is still the same, as is the way he brushes his hair out of his eyes and teases her with a single raised eyebrow.

When January discovers to her shock that the dating show’s producers have cast her as this season’s villain, it’s Ben she turns to for support. But January is keeping secrets from Ben — secrets that threaten to tear them apart. Especially when being with Ben would mean giving up everything she’s worked so hard for.

As each new episode reveals a little bit more about what really happened during filming, January must make a choice about where her allegiances lie, what is real and what is fake…and ultimately, what her future holds.

This is a sweet, chick-lit style romance novel. It contains mild sex scenes and no cliffhangers.
