Chapter 24

Kya Renee

I opened
my eyes but the room was still dark so I knew it was early. I could feel the
weight of Xavier’s arm laying across my waist and it felt heavy so I knew that
he was still in a deep sleep. I closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep
but wasn’t haven’t any luck so when I couldn’t take it anymore I slide away
from Xavier and went to use the bathroom. After I flushed and washed my hands I
closed the bathroom door, unplugged my phone and sat down at Xavier’s desk.
5:30 oh my god, I should be asleep.

I had
four text from Toni:

Ky, Ethan’s coming over to talk and
I’m nervous!!!

Ky?????

Ky, where are you I need you????

Okay fine, ignore me then….

Crap, she’s going to kill me
I replied:

Sorry Tee, CRAZY NIGHT, beyond crazy.
I love you and I’m really sorry. We’ll talk when I get home.

She’s still going to kill me
I looked at Xavier and he looked so peaceful even though I
knew that he had only been sleep for a few hour and I’m pretty sure his mind
was still racing but he just looked peaceful. I pulled my book light out of my book
bag, grabbed my History book and pulled my legs up into the chair with me. I
had six chapters to read.
No time like
the present.

After
two hours I had finally finished reading and had totally overloaded my brain
with dates and facts that would never have any relevance to me after the test
that I had to take on next Tuesday. I closed my History book stood up and
stretched and then laid in on Xavier’s desk when I noticed a large overstuffed
envelope. I picked it up and shined my book light on it but it wasn’t opened so
I checked the return address to see who sent it. Jackson Thomas. It was from
his father, now I was really curious.
I
could open it. Worst case scenario Xavier would get mad but I could cry my way
out of it. Would he really be mad? Don’t open it Ky, put it down. Okay you win.

I put the package back where I found it and
sat down. I lowered my elbow onto thighs, clasped my fist and let my chin land
on top of them.
What now?
I gave up
and decided to try to go back to sleep. I snuck back into bed, lifted Xavier’s
arm and pulled it over my shoulder and held it close to my chest. He woke up
long enough to tighten his grip on me and then rhythm of his breathing let me
know that he was fast asleep again so I closed my eyes and tried to do the
same.

When I finally opened my eyes again I heard the sound of the
TV, not really loud but I could still hear it.

“What time did you get up?” Xavier asked. He
was sitting on the edge of the bed next to me and he placed his hand on the
side of my face.

“What do you mean?” I asked still
half asleep. He pointed to his desk where I had laid my History book and my book
bag.

“Like five something.” I sat up,
stretched and then yanked the covers from under Xavier so that I could get up.
I walked into the bathroom to turn on the water before I came back in the room
to grab my toiletry bag that held my face wash and tooth brush. After I fished
washing my face and brushing my teeth I jumped on the bed next to Xavier and
grabbed him around the waist which made him flinch.

“What’s wrong?” I said and frowned.

“Nothing just sore.”

“Let me see.” I said and turned his
shoulders so that his back was slighting to me. “That looks bad.”

“It’s fine. I got hit with a metal
bat. It’s gonna take a minute to heal.”

“Are you gonna be able to play
Friday?”

“Ky, I’m fine.”

“Okay.”
I’ll let it go
.

He grabbed me around the waist and
pulled me into him before he started kissing my cheek.

“I promise, I’m fine. You should know
after last night.”

“Well if that’s my reference then I
think you’re out of luck for Friday. You need some serious recovery time.”

“Oh so you’ve got jokes. Don’t forget
coach just restocked my supplies, do I need to keep trying until I get it right
then.” He slid me onto the bed, then pinned my arms above my head and began
kissing my neck, moving to my cheek, lips and then back to my neck again.

I laughed and squirmed trying to
wiggle free. “Okay I give. You’re fine.”

“Yes I am but that has nothing to do
with my performance last night.” He said with a smirk.

“Perfect as always.” I smiled.

“I thought so.” He kissed me again
and then let me go.

“I stood up and walked over to his
desk. “What’s this?” I asked and then picked up the envelope.

“I don’t know.” He glanced at me and
then focused on the TV again.

“Are you going to open it?” I asked
and then sat down next to him holding the envelope.

“Not now.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t really care what it
is.”

“Do you mind if I open it?”
Please say okay, the suspense is killing me.

“Do what you want.” He looked at me
with no expression and then right back to the TV.

“Are you sure?”

“Open it or don’t, I really don’t
care.” He kissed me on the cheek to let me know he wasn’t mad and then walked
into the bathroom and shut the door.

I lifted the end of the envelope and
slide my finger under the sealed edge to open it. I peeked inside before I
turned it upside down and slide the contents out onto my lap. After everything
was out I dropped the envelope on the bed next to me and picked up the stack of
papers that were neatly clipped together. There was a hand written not on the
front from his father that read:

Xavier,

The last thing that I want to do is make you feel like your mother kept
you from me because I know how much you loved her and how much more she loved
you but honestly there’s no other way to explain the reason why I wasn’t a part
of your life. I tried. I really did but the harder I tired the worse I made
things for the two of you so eventually she begged me to let go. The only
option I had was to take you away from her completely and that would mean
ripping her heart right out of her chest because you were her heart. I couldn’t
do that so I did what she asked and I let go. It was the hardest thing that I
have ever done in all my life. I hope you can understand and that. I walked
away from my son because I loved your mother and it’s what she needed me to do.

You are my son!

I can’t make up for the years that I wasn’t
there or the things that you suffered because of it but I would like to be here
now. All I’m asking is that you consider it.

I love you son,

Jackson

I unclipped the letter and found a
stack of court documents and tried to understand what I was looking at. It
appeared to be custody documents from where Jackson had petitioned several
times to get shared custody of Xavier. There were several versions with
different variations of the agreement all denied by Victoria Leigh Adams.
Wow, so it’s true
“What is it?” Xavier
asked when he stepped out of the bathroom

“Here.” I said and handed him the
letter from his father.

“What is this?” He asked before he
even looked at it.

“Just read it.”

He sat down in this computer chair
and stared at the letter. When he was done reading it he turned and placed it
on his desk. I stacked the papers I was holding, stood up sat down on his lap
which forced him to lean back in the chair. “Here’s the rest.” I said and then
held the stack of papers up so that he could see them. He slid the papers from
my hand turned and placed them on top of the letter from his father. “I know
you love, and you are just trying to help but this is not your fight so let it
go. I have and you need to.”

He lifted me from his lap stood up
and walked out of his room. I knew that now was not the time so I left I let it
go.
For now!

Xavier Lee

I sat at my desk scanning the stack
of papers that Jackson sent to me.
What
now?
I had all the proof that I needed but something inside of me felt
twisted. I somehow began to feel disloyal to my mother because a part of me
wanted to let him in but then again she had kept me away from him all these
years. I loved my mother, that would never change and there was no doubt in my
mind that she loved me but was keeping me away from Jackson really about me? It
didn’t keep my safe because I have the X-rays and memories to prove it. I needed
to understand why but the only person who could give me the answers that I was
looking for, the answers that I needed was no longer here. I guess the only
thing left to do is to reach out to one person that I did have left….

“Xavier Hi, I’m surprised to hear
from you.”

“I’d like to talk if you’re not too
busy.”

“No, not at all. I always have time
for you. I’m just glad you called.”

I stood up and began to pace.
Here goes nothing.
“Yeah well I just had
a few questions….”
