Chapter One

Fires of Hell

Violet.

It was the most mesmerizing shade slicing through the eternal nothing that was labeled darkness. Lucien couldn’t tear his eyes away from the vision in front of him. Not that he wanted to anyway, she was the most stunning creature he’d ever laid his eyes on. And being a half Incubus, half Demon who resided in Hell—he’d say he was a lucky bastard.

No more than a moment later, her pure lips were on his. Untainted and soft—and her scent was divine. If he hadn’t known any better he’d say she was sent straight from the Heavens themselves just for him. Scoffing, he knew that to be total and utter bullshit, but neither thought was gonna ruin this moment for him. Tangling his fingers in her long black hair, he moaned as her supple breast pushed up against his hard, bare chest.

The look in her eyes was pure hunger. Sexual hunger and he was willing to oblige. The swelling between his legs had attested to that. Burying his face in her neck, he took in more of her blissful scent, and detained the memory firm in the far edges of his mind. Her warm mouth was now on his neck, and he felt her delicate tongue brush ever so gently along the edge. Throwing his head back, he allowed the pure pleasure suffocate him; he felt her mouth kiss his chin. Then, he felt her tongue slide down his throat.

The utter fact that she hadn’t flinched at the scar tracing his jugular made him more at ease. Having knowing the embarrassment of women flinching at the mere sight of his scars was grueling. Hence why he’d learned to either stay away from them or glamour them to see what he could’ve been without them marring his skin.

If only—

Tossing the thoughts aside,
he went back to the task at hand. Grabbing his violet eyed beauty by both wrists, he flipped her over and laid her slender body on the cool mattress. Hearing the moan that escaped her lips, he pushed forward in knowing she craved him as much as he craved her. Burying his face in her neckline once more, he gently traced his tongue downward before nipping at it. Hearing another moan, he kept going.

She tastes like pure ecstasy.
He thought.

In the next instant he heard a shrill scream. One that sent chills down his spine as a honey tang coated his fiery tongue. Next, there were struggles.

His against hers.

Lucien was holding her down against her will an undoubtedly draining the sweet life out of her. No pun intended. Her blood was sweeter than bee pollen and he knew there was no stopping it.

Let her go you idiot!!
His mind scolded.

Ignoring the voice, he dug his fangs deeper and more of the sweet blood oozed into his mouth and down his throat.
For a while, he tried to be someone else, to be better. But nothing seemed to change, he knew now. This was who he really was inside.

A blood thirsty demon.

As he got drenched in her blood, he realized something. He’d finally found himself. He loved snuffing the life out of the innocent as much as his conscience, if that was what you called it, tried to prove otherwise. Fighting the urge of his natural nature wasn’t the least bit fulfilling. But here, lying on top of a dying creature pleased him.

This
is
who I really am!!
He shouted back at the stupid “angel” lurking in his mind.

That’s what humans said right?
That they constantly had an angel on one shoulder, and a demon on the next fighting for control. God, he’d wished a billion times that he didn’t have to deal with right and wrong like the other demons—but something in him must’ve been wired wrong in his creation.

You’re not like them. Let her go free
. He heard vibrate through the ruins of his mind.

To his dismay, it was his own voice speaking to him and as much as he wanted to lie to himself, he wanted to let her go. He just couldn’t stop himself and set her free. But in an instant, he felt her body still. The decision had passed.

He’d fucked up.

Feeling the bed vibrate beneath him, he loosened the grip he had on her wrist. Finally drawing himself back, he looked up see the room had begun to crumble. The very wall in front of him split from the bottom up. The fracture itself was huge enough to let the souls of Purgatory out. Looking down, he saw the bed was empty. No violet eyed girl, no blood, just him.

Hearing
sputtering and crackles from the licks of fire, followed by searing heat, he panicked. Knowing that temperature all too well one thing shot to mind. Peering into the dark center of the newly made doorway, he spotted fiery eyes staring back. He knew better than to stay put. Instincts kicking in, he went to jump from the bed to grab his weapons, only to see the floor had now turned to molten lava.

Hell was definitely on his heels.

“This isn’t fair!!” he shouted, knowing the intended audience heard him.

Not that he would get an answer.

Gripping the bed, he wobbled as it began to sink. The molten lava was eating through the steel and undoubtedly hungry for him.

To take him back.

Back to the scorching depths of despair that he loathe more than anything. Well maybe not anything. There was one thing he hated more and Lucien was sure that the sick fuck was watching him sweat while eating a bowl of fresh eyeballs. Quivering at the notion, he again threw those thoughts aside. Quickly scanning the room for an exit, he found only one choice. The damned crack in front of him. It was either that or falling into the lava and he wasn’t for that kind of anguish.

No, he wasn’t chicken. He just knew better.

Swallowing his fear, he leapt just as the bed itself disappeared into the orangey flames below. The wall shut behind him and the darkness claimed him.

Swallowed him whole in one gulp.

B
linking away the drowsiness, Lucien opened his eyes to a blurred vision. But one thing was undoubtedly apparent.

He was in Hell.

Literally, figuratively—and any other way that counted. The stench itself was foul, something he could unquestionably live without. Not to mention the heat. It was like living
in
the sun. Scratch that, he would say it was worse.

Indescribable.

Flinching, he noted the pain jolting through his wrist and back. Gathering the strength to look on either side, he saw Wrath and Envy’s slithering claws hooked into his wrist. Easily tearing straight through muscle and bone. They were only two of the seven sins out there. Well the seven that the humans knew about anyway. But that was another story. Both fiends were in their monstrous form. Their real structure and it was definitely the stuff nightmares were made of. Each towering easily over 9 feet with mangled features—they were plain ole hideous.

Had Lucien
not been in so much pain, he would have laughed in Envy’s face for the mere fact that the demon envied him. Again, no pun intended. Envy hated the “beauty” that Lucien was granted with. Sandy blonde hair, green eyes, perfect pearly white teeth—Born looking as a human should, whereas Envy and the rest of the demons had to transform to look that way. Having oversized teeth, razors sharp claws, smoldered skin and deformed bones could really dampen anyone’s day.

Sssomeone’s finally awake.” Envy replied with his forked tongue.

Lucien was gonna rip that slimy thing out one day and shove it right up his—

“Welcome back.” Dante smiled, baring his fangs as he interrupted Lucien’s thoughts.

Grimacing, Lucien knew that voice all too well. It was the sole reason he was in this hell hole.

Dante.

Erlik
was his true name, but over the millennia he learned to adapt and take a more formal identity. Not that he needed any title; his face alone was etched into the sands of time and burned into the memory of every demon and soul in Tartarus. Being that he was the first human
ever
created said something. No, he wasn’t Adam; he was created eons ahead of him. Just as Lilith had been created eons ahead of Eve, but that was yet and still another story.

Erlik
had once ruled in the Heavens as a god—that was until he was banished to the Underworld. That tad bit had occurred because as a god, he had been the Ruler of the Spirit Realm, but being born without one himself, he steered over to the dark side. After falling into the pit, he sided with Lucifer and began entrancing souls for Hell and earning his rightful place.

Becoming
the King of the Dark, and the Judge of the Dead.

Not to mention a death dealer.
Building his own army of servants to do his bidding on Earth, whatever the task. This was where Lucien unfortunately fell in. Since birth, Lucien had been trained to fight and kill the most horrible of the most evil. And since birth, Lucien had fought the urge to fall in line and slay what he thought to be innocent, not that he had a choice. Killing was the only thing he was good at. At least that was what was drilled in his head until he believed it. So, he became the best at it.

But after being sent to Earth to slaughter human after human, Lucien began to feel desolate. Having the blood of so many stained on his hands weighed heavy on his heart, if he even had one. Sometimes he blamed it on the fact that he looked so much like them, but he knew the real reason why. Deep down he wanted to
be
as they were. To walk Earth with no real care or worry except to find a real job, fall in love and have a family.

To have it that simple would be…well paradise.

Pure bliss.

To be able to erase the memory of the horrors that lurked in the shadow
and the corners of his mind would be amazing. But in his reality, to really know the Wrath of Hell was agonizing in its own right. The bastard was standing to his right, digging his grubby hooks into Lucien’s flesh. And to be born in Tartarus, always having to call it home was pure torture.

But there were perks to being a demon too.

Like being immortal, and having staggering strength, not to mention the wings he had to fly. Yeah, wings. No, not the white fluffy crap that Angels wore. He had pitch black razor sharp wings that sprouted when he needed them. Not to mention he could slice through damn near anything with them. Unless he was imprisoned.

Like now.

The ground vibrated as Dante stepped in front of them. Staring from his feet up, Lucien held in a breath. His kneecaps themselves were made of the faces of two demons that Dante slew. Two who dared to plot against him the moment he got to Tartarus. He wore them around solely to show the message:
