Chapter One

“We’ve got to have an assistant, Clay. I’m tired of fielding all these stupid-ass calls and just any Tom, Dick, or Betty Boop walking in when I’m busy working,” Elliot said.

“So let’s get someone from the float pool. You choose. I’m too busy with the Mastersons’ contract.” Clay shuffled some papers around on his desk.

Elliot sat on one corner of the desk and shook his head.

“You choose. I’m juggling two buyouts now.”

“Then we both have to interview together. I’ll call down to Human Resources and ask for a group of candidates to choose from.” Clay handed Elliot a folder.

Elliot grabbed the folder and sat it on top of the stack. He sighed and shook his head.

“Make sure they know we want
someone more mature with some contract experience,” Clay said.

“Do you think that will leave anyone to interview?” Elliot chuckled.

“Who knows? I just don’t want to be chased around my desk,” Clay said.

“No, you like to do the chasing.”

Elliot walked over to his office next door and picked up the phone. He called down to HR and gave them his requirements. They assured him there would be a few qualified people left for them to choose from. He sat up a time for the interviews and checked with Clay to be sure it was fine with him.

They called him back within the next two hours with six qualified candidates who were available.

“I guess six is a good number. Not too many to have to single one out,” he later told Clay.

“I suppose there were more experienced women in the float pool than we thought.”

* * * *

Friday during lunch they spent time reviewing the questions they planned to ask and looked through the folders delivered that morning. Neither of them had had time to look over them yet. Clay was a little put out that he hadn’t taken the time to look them over before now.

They immediately discounted two of the six as not having enough experience. They would interview them out of courtesy since they’d been told they would be interviewed.

A third folder proved to be a man with several years of good experience, but not in contract law. He had excellent job reviews. He would be one to keep out.

Then they came across Desire’s folder. Clay read through her folder while Elliot reviewed the man’s folder. She was single. She was thirty-two with no children. She had an associate’s degree in business law and was a paralegal as well. She’d worked for three years in an office of a contract lawyer in Memphis, Tennessee. She had been with their firm for two years after moving from Memphis for a change in scenery.

Hmmm, that could mean anything from man trouble to financial difficulties.
He figured it didn’t matter. Desire wasn’t totally out.

“The guy sounds like he has some good credentials, but I’m not sure about his sexual preferences. We’ll have to wait and see when he arrives,” Elliot said. “What do you have?”

“I think I have the perfect one for us.” He handed over Desire’s file.

After a few minutes of reading through her employee file, Elliot lifted his eyebrows and nodded his head.

“I think you may be right. She sounds perfect. I’m a little concerned that she’s single, but she has the needed experience. There aren’t any write-ups in her file for unprofessional conduct. The list says she’s last to interview,” Elliot noticed.

“We’ll have to go through the rest of them regardless, but we can hedge on some of the questions we had on the two we know we don’t want,” Clay suggested.

They spent the next three hours talking with the candidates before Desire. The man turned out to be gay, though he was in a committed relationship, so they agreed to keep him as a backup plan.

At 4:15 p.m. someone knocked on the door to their conference room. Clay called for them to come in. He and Elliot were on the opposite side of the conference room table from the door, and this put the interviewee on the other side.

The vision who walked in took Clay’s breath away. Deep auburn hair cascaded in curls down her back, swaying as she walked. Eyes the color of a spring sky just after a refreshing rain shower shone with intelligence. She looked to be about five foot five inches in two-inch heels. Her body would make any man groan. The word “voluptuous” came to mind. She had curves in all the right places with an ass to make any man salivate. He found himself adjusting his cock as she sat down across from them at the conference room table

Clay glanced over at Elliot and noted his brother was in the same boat. He had noticed her body as well. Good. He wasn’t alone in the predicament.

“Ms. Addison, I’m Clay Middleton, and this is my brother, Elliot Middleton. It’s nice to meet you,” he said.

“I’m pleased to meet you as well. I hope I will be able to convince you I’m the best choice for the position you have available.”

Clay wanted to stand up and tell her she would be perfect in any position he could fit her in, but restrained himself. If they couldn’t control themselves, she wasn’t the right candidate—she would distract them too much. That left the male candidate. Clay sighed.

“Ms. Addison, this job is very stressful. What do you do to relieve stress?”

“I work out. I kickbox. I also like to read.” She smiled across the table at them.

“What is your most recent accuracy percentage with typing?” Elliot asked.

“98.8%,” she told them.

Their male employee’s was only 94.5%. Not good.

“What made you move from Memphis to Springwater?” Clay asked.

“Memphis has gotten to be a dangerous place to live for a single woman. I had been broken into three times and was tired of it. So, I did some research and Springwater ended up being one of the safest small towns in the area,” she said.

“Is that why you took kickboxing?” Elliot asked.

“It’s why I used to take it. Now, I continue it because I enjoy it, and it’s good exercise. I’ve actually won a few tournaments,” she said proudly.

“What hours are you available to work?” Clay asked.

“Pretty much all hours. I do require some sleep, though,” she said with a smile. “Other than that, I’m open to your hours.

“Do you have any objections to accompanying us on trips when we have to go out of town?” Elliot shuffled a few papers.

She hesitated then drew in a deep breath and shook her head. “No, I’m fine with that,” she finally said.

Their male candidate was fine with an occasional business trip, but stated he couldn’t be on call twenty-four hours a day as he had a relationship to maintain. He was willing to work long hours if they didn’t last for weeks at a time.

“So long hours won’t bother you?” Elliot asked again.

“No, I’m fine with working over. I expect to be compensated with raises and bonuses for exceptional work.” She smiled, and it reached her amazing blue eyes. Once again Clay had to adjust his cock. They were in a tough spot here.

“I think we have all the information we need right now, Ms. Addison. We’ll be in touch with our choice on Monday,” Elliot told her.

They stood up when she did and watched as she walked out of the conference room door.

“Fuck!” They both said in unison.

“What in the hell are we going to do now? She’s perfect for the freaking job,” Clay said.

“I don’t know, but maybe with the way she dresses we can control ourselves around her,” Elliot pointed out.

“Yeah, well, I’m sure as hell interested in her.” Clay picked up his folders.

“That could be a big problem, Clay.”

“Tell me you aren’t interested in her.”

“Hell yeah, I am. She’s a fucking wet dream. My cock is so hard now I could drill an oil well,” Elliot admitted.

“Speaking of which, have you had a chance to review Murphey’s oil contract?” Clay asked.

“Don’t try and change the subject. We need to figure out what we are going to do. I vote we choose her.” Elliot pushed away from the table and headed for the door.

“And how are you planning to explain your dick poking out every time she’s around?” Clay asked as he followed him.

“I figure, with time, she won’t affect me that way anymore. You know, she’s just a novelty that will wear off eventually.”

“I’m not so sure I agree with that.” Clay opened the door and they stepped out into the hall.

They talked contracts all the way back to Clay’s office. As soon as the door was closed, Elliot jumped back on the subject of Desire.

“We can at least give her a try. I mean professionally, of course.” He grinned. “Hell, what I wouldn’t give to have a chance to taste that pussy.”

Elliot eased one hip on Clay’s desk.

“Man, you are horny. We need to get laid over the weekend before we come back,” Clay said.

“I agree. Jeanie is probably available,” Elliot said.

“Give her a call. I’m going to return the employee files for everyone but Desire. I’ll tell Donna not to let her know yet. We might still change our mind over the weekend.”

“Good idea,” Elliot said.

They settled down to talk cases and contracts, but Clay’s thoughts still returned every so often to those sky blue eyes and that expressive face. He was just as hooked on her as his brother was. They had a problem.
