Katie stood looking out of her hotel room window the scenery was beautiful and she told herself that today would be the day that she finally got out and enjoyed it. As she looked out the window, she thought about her life and recent events. She had been in a relationship for years and it had recently ended. This vacation was supposed to be her way to get over it. The problem was that she had spent the past few days not leaving the room and thinking about her ex.

Things had been great at first, they were best friends for about a year before they had started dating, she had always been attracted to him, but was afraid to say anything for fear of ruining her friendship. When they had begun dating she was ecstatic. Things seemed great between the two of them, they always spent all of their time together and were always having fun, but when he had lost his job things began to change.

Somehow it seemed that he blamed Katie for losing his job. Katie knew that he was simply looking for somewhere to place the blame and it really didn’t bother her that it had landed on her. She felt very sorry for him because she knew how much he loved the job and that he did not think he would ever be able to find another like it.

The two of them lived in a small town and jobs like that simply did not exist. Katie had thought that things were getting back to normal between the two of them when he had found a new job, but as it turned out he began focusing more on the job than on her. He began working late hours, not spending any time with her and before long she didn’t even feel like she was in a relationship.

Katie thought that she was in love, but when she found out that he had been cheating on her since he had started his new job she refused to stay with him any longer. Katie had confronted him about hit, having hard proof that he had cheated, but he still denied it. When she showed him the proof he realized that he was caught and that she knew he had been lying to her.

He had tried to get back together several times and that was why she had to get away. She knew that she could not move on with her life if he continued to act like they were still in a relationship. He would show up at her job and bring her lunch, send flowers to her at home and leave sweet messages on her phone for her to find when she woke up in the mornings.

Katie felt sorry for him, but she no longer had love for him. She had to get away so that she could get on with her life and so that he could get on with his. Katie smiled as she thought about her future. She felt as if she were in control and that she could do anything that she wanted.

She was proud of herself for not taking her ex back, she felt as if she was growing as a person and that she was realizing her value as a woman. In the past, she would have taken someone back that had cheated on her simply because she did not want to be alone, but as Katie looked at the beautiful sunrise in the distance she knew she was strong enough to handle anything.

Katie turned and walked toward the bathroom of her hotel room and wondered what the future had in store for her. She gathered all of her supplies for her shower and thought about her past, the men that she had dated and vowed those days were behind her.

As Katie stepped into the shower, she thought about what she really wanted in life. She thought about the type of man that she would want to spend the rest of her life with. Katie was not the type of woman to go out and look for a man, she knew that eventually one would come to her that would be perfect for her, but she realized that she had not determined what perfect for her would be.

One thing that she knew was that she wanted a man that did not put anything before her. She also wanted one that was honest and caring as well as loyal. For now she just wanted to be happy on her own and enjoy her vacation.

She stepped out of the shower and looked in the fogged up mirror as she dried her body. She did not understand why her ex had cheated on her and that was probably the thing that had affected her the most. She always tried to stay in shape and tried to take care of her body. She always made sure that her hair was done, her nails were polished and that her makeup was perfect.

She had thought at first that it had to be something that had been wrong with her that had caused him to cheat, but as the days went by she began to realize that it had nothing to do with her but had to do with who he was as a person. That did not stop her from questioning herself occasionally, judging her body or losing confidence in who she was. Each time she had to remind herself that she had done everything that she could to ensure the relationship was successful and that the fault was not with her.

Katie began to get dressed and smiled to herself. She was ready to spend the rest of her vacation enjoying herself and relaxing. She had never been the type of person to spend much time relaxing. Instead, she focused on being productive and getting things done. She always had a project going and was always learning something new. This was the first time in years that she did not have a schedule planned and did not know what she was going to do with her time and that felt good.

Katie wanted to wander around the hotel after she ate breakfast and slipped on a maxi dress and a simple pair of flip flops. She was not willing to go too far from the hotel without a guide and her only goal for the day was to actually get out of the hotel.

She quickly made her way down the stairs and into the lobby where breakfast was waiting for her. Katie grabbed a few muffins and headed out the front door. Outside of the hotel was an area that was covered with tables which allowed visitors to enjoy the outdoors while eating or simply hanging out together. There were large plants and flowers everywhere and a small path that led through them into a large garden area on the side of the hotel.

Katie followed the path and found herself in the middle of the most beautiful garden she had ever seen. She picked at her muffin as she looked around. Katie scanned the area when something in the distance caught her eye. It looked like a sign, it was in the shape of an arrow and it was covered in ceramic glass pieces.

Katie walked toward the sign and found that it was pointing to a hiking trail. The trail looked very clear and Katie decided that she would walk a little ways down it. She knew that she could not go far because of her clothing and shoes and wished that she had dressed more appropriately for a hike.

Hiking was something that Katie loved to do, but had not been able to do in a very long time. It had become very difficult for her to keep up with her job, her hobbies and spend the time with her ex that he had expected her to spend with him. Some of the things that she loved had fallen by the wayside and hiking had been one of them.

There was so much that Katie wanted to see on the island and she knew that this trail would be added to her list. The sign had warned not to enter without a proper escort but Katie decided that since she was not going to go deep into the woods it did not matter. She also knew that she had watched plenty of people walking in and out of the woods from her hotel room window over the past few days and it seemed safe enough to her.

Katie began walking into the woods, listening to the birds in the trees above her and simply enjoying the view. She felt completely at peace in the woods and it was not long before she realized that she had traveled much further than she had wanted, but she was not ready to go back to the hotel yet.

The woods were peaceful and she felt more relaxed than she had in a very long time. So she sat on a thick patch of moss and looked up at the sky. She watched the beams of the sun dance through the leaves as they moved in the air and enjoyed the feeling of the warm breeze on her face.

Katie heard a few branches pop in the woods around her and although it startled her at first she did not allow it to frighten her. Something inside of her told her that she was safe, but she also knew that she was getting hungry and decided it was time to head back to the hotel. Katie stood and looked around suddenly she was unsure of which direction she had come from.

As she looked at the paths around her, she decided to follow one, she was confident that it was the path she had been on but as she walked she felt as if she were getting deeper and deeper into the woods. It seemed to be getting much darker than she remembered it being and the top of the trees were much thicker than before. She could no longer see the sun beams and her eyes struggled to focus.

Katie stopped and looked around her when out of the corner of her eye she saw something move. This time she did not feel safe and instead terror began to take over her body. Katie began running but did not make it very far. She instantly regretted wearing flip flops to walk in the woods in as she tripped over a branch and was sent rolling down a hill.

Everything was a blur, happening so fast that she knew she could not stop it, but somehow it felt as if it were happening in slow motion as well. That was Katie’s last thought before her head hit a rock and everything went black.

“Are you okay,” Katie heard a man’s voice asking her. She tried to open her eyes, but the pain in her head was more than she could bare.

She felt hands wrap around her shoulders and lift her up, her head fell to the side and landed on what she knew to be a man’s chest. Katie fought to open her eyes as she felt his hand wipe across her face, pain shot through her head, but she knew she had to get her eyes open.

Finally, using every bit of strength that she had, she was able to open them slightly. She saw a beautiful man holding her up against his chest as he sat next to her. His skin was dark and his hair was sandy blonde. She could not see his eyes as he looked around the woods, but she notices that he had a very defined bone structure. He was unlike any man she had ever seen in her life.

She imagined that he could have been on the cover or any magazine or modeled for any company that he wanted to back home and she wondered what he was doing out in the woods. Katie tried to lift her head off of his chest, but once again pain like needles shot through her head.

The man looked down at her and she noticed he had gray eyes. She had never seen such eyes in her life and was convinced that she had hit her head much harder than she had thought.

“I thought I had lost you,” the man whispered, as he looked down at her.

“Lost me,” Katie managed to say.

The man only smiled and moved Katie’s hair out of her face. After a few minutes he asked if she thought she would be able to stand. Katie had begun feeling much better but had not said anything to the man. She was enjoying his gentle touch and the way that he held her. It had been far too long since she had been held in such a caring way.

Katie nodded her head and the man gently helped her up. “My name is Sam,” he said, still holding on to her.

“Katie,” she replied, gripping his arm as she tried to regain her balance.

“I do not think you can walk back,” Sam said, looking concerned at Katie, “We must get you back.”

Katie looked up at him confused and realized that he was looking at the area of her head that was causing her pain, she reached up and touched it and found that there was dried blood on her forehead.

Sam gave a gentle nod, then looked up the hill Katie had rolled down. “Do you think you can make it back up,” he asked.

Katie looked at the hill, knowing that she could not but not knowing what other choice she had, “I don’t know,” she sighed as tears began to well up in her eyes. Katie looked at Sam and noticed how odd it was that he was only wearing a pair of torn jeans. He had no shoes on, no shirt and no sign of a bag with him. She shook her head as she wondered why he did not have shoes on in the thick woods but did not have time to focus on that. She knew she had to get back to the hotel and see a doctor.

“I have to get back,” she said, taking a step toward the hill. She felt Sam’s hands holding her steady as she began to climb.

“I will be right beside you,” he said, gently, “don’t push yourself too hard. You can take a break whenever you want, it does not matter how long it takes.”

Katie smiled to herself as she slowly made her way up the hill. “I can’t believe I was so stupid,” she said, stopping to take a breath, “Why did I come out here alone.” Katie had always thought of herself as a person who was in great physical condition and she had never had any problems while she was hiking. It scared her that she was out of breath and that the pain in her head only seemed to get worse.

“So I could rescue you,” Sam said, giving her a gentle smile. Katie smiled back enjoying the attention he was giving her, but still focused on the pain in her head.

“Where did you come from,” Sam asked her.

“The hotel,” Katie replied, not sure which direction she should point to.

“That is a long way,” Sam said, with a look of concern on his face, “I don’t know if we will make it back before dark. These woods are not safe for you after dark.”

The way he said it frightened Katie, “But I have you with me,” she replied, trying to boost his confidence.

“We have to hurry,” Sam said, taking Katie by the arm and pulling her along the trail.

Katie tugged back at her arm, “Slow down,” she protested as Sam tried to get her to move faster.

“No,” he said sternly, “You are not safe.”

Katie realized that they were near the hotel, but this time there was no sun shining down through the leaves of the trees. Instead, there was only darkness above her. The only light was coming from the moon and the lights that were around the hotel.
