A force as strong as a tornado whirled around my head, pushing it backwards, plummeting down.

‘Oh Sophia, you thought losing consciousness would stop me? How wrong you were. Now you are going to pay for taking everything I ever loved away from me, my son, my grandson, my father. Did you ever think I would let you get away with it? Now it’s my turn, how I have longed for this.’ Her eyes, so dark, were gouging into my mind, bringing me back to reality, still tethered to the chair as I always was.

‘Please, don’t hurt them, they are innocent.’ My voice was so weak I could barely hear if I actually had spoken.

‘Something we agree on, dear, they will be fine, I will take care of them, twins are such a blessing and my son makes such beautiful babies.’ Her eyes filled with little glimmers of hope amongst the black abyss.

‘Nicholi is the father.’ Not thinking about what I was saying, the words just poured out and the black abyss in her eyes turned to raging molten lava red.

‘You fucking liar, bitch.’ She slapped me again, my head still reeling from the last blow, feeling like a flower on the verge of opening hit by a gale force torrent of wind, the blood splattering across her clothes.

‘Now look what you did.’ As she wiped my blood off her black skin-tight dress, I shuddered, before the pungent aroma of urine penetrated my nostrils.

‘You filthy bitch, do it, do it now, I want my grandchildren.’ She pushed the doctor toward me, looking as petrified as I was.

‘I can’t do this, I told you, I’m just a medical student, I will kill her,’ the doctor almost screamed, stepping back slowly.

‘You won’t kill her, that’s for my pleasure, I want those babies out now, do it or your husband will wish he had never been born.’ The spit was flying from her mouth, like pools of chloric acid, melting everything in its wake. Stepping towards me once again, the doctor froze.

‘I’m so sorry,’ she whispered taking a scalpel off the surgical table of instruments that had been placed next to me.

‘No,’ I screamed, stretching my bound hands so forcefully I heard the crack before I felt the pain, my shoulder suddenly loose and floppy as the searing jolt of pain hit me. My arms were free from the chair and realising this; the doctor stepped back and slammed into Larissa with the scalpel, her bloodcurdling screams echoing off the empty moulded walls. Larissa lunged for the doctor with a knife, the blade teetering against her stomach before she plunged it through, the doctor floundering on top of her. This was my chance; launching myself out of the chair, I burst towards the door, willing my legs to function long enough for me to exit.

Heading for the stairway, I threw the door open and bounded down the stairs, circling each floor without breathing, each movement sending agonising spears of pain in my shoulder. I could see it; the ground floor was just up ahead, focusing on that only, I did not see the door open to the side of the first floor.

‘I have never hated anyone as much as I hate you, you’re going to die now and it’s all your fault.’ She lunged towards me, the sounds of a gun reverberating around the enclosed stairway. Something caught my eye at the window, its beautiful silk wings fluttering in the breeze. The sun radiating throughout the red satin cloth like wings, sending a halo of reflection through the mirrored window. My grandfather, an avid collector of butterflies had one favourite, the Crimson Rose and as I watched it dance, pirouetting against the crystal glass I could not have agreed more.

‘Caitlan, it’s Lexi, I’m here.’ Then slowly, slowly nothingness.
