“I don’t know how to be a girlfriend,” I whisper back, leaning my head back to give him better access to my neck.

“Just be yourself,” he says, confidence lacing his tone as if he doesn’t really care about the details.

We move over to the bed, and he sits down with me on his lap. I gather up my courage, knowing I have to tell him one more thing before the night is over. I grab his face between my two hands, and boldly press a kiss on his lips.

He starts breathing heavily, rubbing his hands up and down my back, and I know he’s preparing for another one of our infamous make out sessions. I pull back, and place two fingers on his lips. “Wait, there’s something else I want to tell you. Something else I’ve decided tonight.”

“What’s that?”

I go to answer, and find myself a little embarrassed to be admitting it out loud. Maybe because I’m finally seeing what everyone else has been seeing all along.

“I’ve decided to go to the hearing.”

His eyes go wide, his two hands moving down to squeeze my hips. “Do you mean it? To tell your story?”

Tears form as the full impact of what I have to do hits me full force. I’m terrified. “Yeah.”

He pulls my face up to his for another quick scorching kiss that takes my breath away. “This is the best night of my life,” he tells me.

I laugh as he wipes the tear that’s fallen from my eye. “That’s a little dramatic.”

He grins and then moves suddenly to grab his phone. “We have to tell your mom and Sabrina.”

I roll my eyes as he unlocks his phone and hits my mom’s name from his contact list. He puts it on speaker when she picks up.

“What’s going on? Is everything all right?”

If only she could see his face, I think with a smile. “Yes mom, everything is fine. We just have some big news.”

“Indigo has agreed to be my girlfriend,” Kennedy cuts in, a doofy grin on his face.

My mouth drops open, not thinking that was the particular news he would be sharing. My mom laughs. “Congratulations you two! I can only picture Indigo’s face right now.”

“You’re picturing right,” I mutter, so she can hear me. “We were really calling because I have something else to tell you.”

Kennedy and my mom both wait patiently as I gather myself. I close my eyes and just say it. “I have decided to talk at the hearing.”

My mom doesn’t say anything at first, and I can hear the tears in her voice when she finally answers and tells me how happy she is. She’s with Jack, and even he chimes in from the background saying how brave he thinks I am. We talk for another five minutes, and then we call Sabrina to tell her the news. Her reaction is instant, a whoop and cheer, and then since she feels responsible for my change of heart, asks me how I ever got along without her as a friend. Kennedy also tells her about our new relationship status, and she cheers again. After I promise to tell her how it went down tomorrow, we hang up.

We sit there for a moment quietly and hold each other. I yawn loudly and Kennedy gets up to turn off the lights. Afterwards, he crawls into bed beside me, tells me how happy I’ve made him over and over again, and kisses me to sleep.

KENNEDY

A couple days later Shawn, Indigo and I are in the cafeteria having lunch. Well, they’re in the cafeteria, I’m on cloud nine. My plan to ask her out didn’t go exactly as I planned…it went better than I could have ever imagined, and the past two days have been perfect.

My eyes stray across the table, and I watch her talking animatedly with Shawn about the dance she’s working on for class. I can’t really concentrate on her words when her lips look so sweet. I’ve kissed her dozens of time now, so I know from experience they are exactly that. The male part of me knows Indigo wants to talk things further, I can tell from the way she moves against me when we’re together. Lord knows I know want to oblige her, but until I hear the words from her, make out sessions at midnight it is. It’s starting to kill me though, because I’m pretty sure wanting her has become a part of my DNA.

“So what are we doing for your birthday tonight?” Shawn asks. “I know it’s a Tuesday night but we should do something.”

Oh yeah. My birthday totally slipped my mind. Indigo squeals and stares at me in accusation. “Today is your birthday?! How could you not tell me?”

I shrug. “It’s tomorrow. Honestly I kind of forgot. I’m not really big on celebrating my birthday.”

“His mom never really had time to celebrate. She would always get him a nice gift, but was too busy to do much else.” Shawn gives me a knowing look when my face drops at the mention of my mom.

Shit. Something else I haven’t given much thought to lately. Staring at Indigo, and how indignant she looks that I didn’t tell her about my birthday, fills my stomach with a spiky ball of nerves. How mad will she be when she knows the truth about who my mom is if she’s this annoyed at a birthday? I make the decision then and there that I can’t put it off any longer.  I should have told her weeks ago. A panicked and sinking feeling starts creeping in when I realize how wrong the decision was.

Indigo is looking at me thoughtfully after Shawn’s words. “Well this year I’d like to make it special. What do you want to do Kennedy?”

“I know what he wants,” Shawn jokes, waggling his eyebrows.

I throw my straw across the table at him, my heart half in it when I think about how my dishonesty might ruin the best thing that’s ever happened to me. “I don’t really want to do anything. We can all just hang out or something.”

“Let’s plan a big dinner for Friday,” Shawn suggests. He looks down at his plate. “It would be nice to hang out the four of us again.”

Indigo turns to him, her eyes sympathetic. “That’s a good idea. I’ll work on it.” She turns to me. “You pick the place.”

“Somewhere with a bar, because you’re the big 2-1,” Shawn exclaims. “All our years of scrounging for drinks are finally over.”

He does the sign of the cross and we all laugh.

“Yeah. Okay. I’ll pick the place.”

Indigo smiles beautifully at me, and I toy with the idea of asking her not to be mad at me for my birthday present. Ha. That would go well.

“I can’t believe I didn’t know it was your birthday,” Indigo says again. “You always get me such nice things, I’ll have to think of something good.”

“I don’t want you to buy me anything.” I tell her sternly. “I just want to be with you.”

“And that’s my cue to leave,” Shawn says. “I’ll catch you guys later.”

We wave goodbye to Shawn and I reach across the table to grab her hand. “I mean it. Let’s just stay in tonight and watch a movie. That’s what I want.”

She squeezes my hand. “Okay. If that’s what you want.”

“Just no more magic men dancing please,” I tease. “That’s my only request.”

A strange look passes over her face, and then she grins. “No more dancing men. Got it.”

When I get to Indigo’s dorm after my last class, she’s in the bathroom when I walk inside. I notice that it’s dark except for one light, which for her, is unusual without me there. I’ve spent the past two hours psyching myself up for the conversation that I have to have with her tonight about my mom. I’m so nervous I couldn’t even eat dinner.

“I’ll be right out,” she calls. “I left something for you on the desk. Why don’t you take a seat and read it?” I put my bag down and sit in the chair, noticing a short letter. “Don’t turn on any lights.”

“Okay.” Confused, I pick up the paper.

Kennedy,

I’m so happy to be your girlfriend, and I can only hope that I can give you everything that you want. You said no dancing men tonight…so for your birthday, I decided I will make half of that wish come true.”

What? I stare at the words, not really getting it. But when I hear the bathroom door open, and get a glimpse at what Indigo is wearing, all thoughts of the note abruptly disappear.

“Holy shit,” I whisper under my breath. She’s got on a black bra, black boy shorts, and a pair of killer black heels. Her long hair is laying over her shoulders, partially covering her face. She’s wringing her hands, her eyes locked on mine as if she’s unsure of herself.

I’m convinced that I’m dating the sexiest woman in the entire world. My body turns to face hers, I can’t help it. “Indigo, you look so fucking amazing.” She looks down at herself, and I take the opportunity to do the same and my heart starts pounding. “What’s this about?”

She doesn’t answer right away, but turns and walks over to her iPod stand. My eyes follow her every step, my hands itching to touch her perfect ass. “I want to dance for you, for your birthday.”

My eyes go wide as she presses the play button. The song Black Velvet starts playing, the chords deep and sultry. I nearly back away when she starts walking towards me, so floored I am by what’s going on. She moves behind me and I help her when she starts turning the chair so it’s facing the center of the room. And then she’s standing in front of me, my elegant lover. My eyes rove over her, trying to burn the image of her into my brain.

I’ve seen a little bit of Indigo’s body before, but nothing prepares me for the sheer sensuality of her standing nearly naked before me. I’m instantly hard when she starts swaying her hips and running her fingers down her torso.

“Oh my god,” I breathe out, the words coming hoarse from my tight throat.

I watch through hooded eyes as she runs her fingers slowly through her long hair, piling it on her head before swiveling her hips around in a circle. Her back is to me now, and I stare in rapture at the view. I have no idea what to do with my hands, because all they want to do is reach out and grab her. I settle for fisting them in my lap watching her sway and move perfectly to the music, each small turn of her body graceful.

She’s a flawless dancer. When she starts bending over my mouth goes dry, unable to believe I’m seeing my sweet Indigo in such a position. I can’t help it then and I reach out and grab her hips to bring her on to my lap.

She laughs under breath, a temptress now. Before I can get her seated in my lap, she squirms out of my arms and faces me, her eyes gently scolding. “No. No. You know the rules, no touching.”

“I don’t think I can follow that rule.” My voice sounds deep even to my own ears. She hasn’t stopped moving, and I’m so fucking turned on I feel almost panicked.

Moving towards me, her arms go above her head and she does a full spin, giving me a perfect view of each side of her body. I’m aware of how heavily I’m breathing, but when her hands go behind her back as if she’s going to unclasp her bra, all the air leaves me in a rush.

She gives me a small smile at the same time the straps go slack on her shoulders. She holds the material up to her chest creating cleavage that I can’t take my eyes off.

She turns back around and then the bra falls off. My eyes lock on her back, praying she’ll turn around so I can see her. Instead, she moves backwards and sits on my lap, her ass right in my crotch. I know she can feel my erection, and instead of moving away, she starts grinding against me.

I groan out loud, looking down to where our bodies are connected, memorized by the seductive movement of her hips. My hands grip the bottom of the chair as if my life depends on it.

She continues the sweet torture for a few more seconds, before standing up and turning around to face me. And although it’s dark, I get my first good look at her.

She’s so perfectly formed, I shake my head slowly back and forth, nearly mindless with lust. As if answering my call, she climbs on to my lap, straddling me, her chest pushing right into my face. She’s never danced this closed to me before. The other times, there was a distance there, she was holding back. There’s no trace of that this time.
